License 1601 Nov. 24, Mexico City, for a Discalced Carmelite mission to California / Virrey ... de la nueva Sp[añ]a.

Notes the royal cedulas in the Mexican government records granting the Order the right to preach in New Mexico and elsewhere, and also notes the Franciscan petition, presented some time before this, that the Carmelites not be allowed into California. Also notes that the Franciscans had abandoned the Rio Verde mission in New Mexico, and that the Carmelites had been prevented from entering New Mexico. Reserves for the Franciscans a potential right to join in the California mission field, and entrusts the Carmelites with finding friars to go in the ships to explore the Pacific coasts. (con't) The royal scrivener's note at the end, dated 1601 Nov. 29, states that this permit had been shown and read to Fray Buenaventura de Paredes, the Franciscan Provincial, who wanted a copy in order to prepare his protest to the Viceroy. The protest is probably manuscript number seven in this collection.
